"As an experiment you could:

-take a light reading (on 'P' mode)

-adjust it on  'M' then bracket 

so if the light reading was 1/125 @ f5.6

-keep the shutter speed the same and change the f number, 

-above and below the light reading.  For example:

1/250@ f5.6

1/500 @ f5.6

1/1000 @ f5.6

then the other way such as:

1/125 @ f5.6

1/60 @ f5.6

1/30 @ f5.6"

As the f number increases (from f1.4 to f16) 

- the aperture gets smaller 

- less light gets in the camera and 

- the image gets darker.
